Editing

EDITING IS ESSENTIAL

Editing is an essential part of the development of your manuscript and final product. It's worth it to present the best version of your text. And you cannot rely on a spell checker. Your manuscript needs to adhere to style guides and be edited by a professional with industry standard experience. We will evaluate your manuscript, determine the necessary level of editing, and discuss it with you. Typically, 50% of the balance is due before work will begin. The rest is due upon completion.

PROOFREADING

This is the most basic level of editing and, ideally, should be done after a more substantive level of editing. Proofreading focuses on correcting misspellings, punctuation, capitalization, verb tense, and grammar issues. Proofreading is not a structural edit and concentrates instead on eliminating minor mistakes and inconsistencies.

COPY EDITING

Copy editing is also a basic edit yet more in-depth than proofreading. It is a  word-by-word edit that focuses on grammar, usage, and consistency issues. A copy edit is also different from a basic proofread because the editor will check for continuity in your text and anything that will confuse the reader. Your copy editor will check for typos, grammar errors, consistency, and punctuation.

LINE EDITING

Line editing is an intensive structural edit that focuses on the finer aspects of language—the flow of ideas, transition elements, tone, and style. Your line editor will take a critical look at your manuscript’s writing flow, language usage, character development, and more, and make suggestions that ensure that you’re communicating your story effectively while maintaining your voice.

  • Correction of awkward constructions and suggestions to make sentences crisper and tighter by fixing redundancy.
  • Review of key aspects of the manuscript—the narrative, vocabulary, structure, characterization, style, and development.
  • Editor's notes and overall comments.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

Developmental editing is also called substantive editing and checks everything from words to phrases to sentences to paragraphs. Developmental editors address structure, flow, character, plot, and more. Your manuscript can change drastically, but for the better as your developmental editor will keep your audience, purpose, and desired tone in mind. They will edit for your ultimate success and provide feedback along the way.
